Kakadu Plum: Nature’s Natural Immune Booster for Kids

by Boris Teixeira |

What is a Kakadu plum?

The Kakadu plum is a unique fruit that is grown and harvested in the top part of Australia. It is also called Australia’s Indigenous superfood due to its beneficial nutrient and medicinal properties. The properties of this plum have made it popular among Aboriginal communities for thousands of years.

Kakadu plums and immune health

The vitamin C content of the Kakadu Plum measures up to 100 times more vitamin C than in an orange. In fact, these plums contain the highest natural amount of vitamin C found in any food on Earth (2).

The mighty vitamin C is important for maintaining proper functioning of a child’s immune system so that it can defend itself against unwanted cold-causing infections, making Kakadu plum the perfect food for supporting immunity.

Among many other incredible immune-supporting actions, Vitamin C is used by our immune cells to produce antimicrobial substances that can help to kill off infectious viruses and bacteria. In this way, vitamin C can help to prevent and reduce the duration of infections such as the common cold.

While many people may automatically reach for vitamin C supplements during the colder months to support their immunity, they often lack many of the ‘helper nutrients’ which work alongside vitamin C in the body and help to strengthen its immune system benefits. The helper nutrients specific to vitamin C are a group of phytochemicals called bioflavonoids, and they are often found concentrated in plant foods also rich in vitamin C – including Kakadu plum. This is one advantage of sourcing nutrition from real wholefoods, rather than supplements with synthetic nutrients.

Kakadu plums are also full of antioxidants!

Due in part to its rich vitamin C content, the Kakadu Plum is also one of the richest antioxidant foods available and contains more antioxidants than a blueberry. Antioxidants are health-promoting substances found in a wide range of plant-based foods, and include substances such as vitamins C, bioflavonoids and the famous antioxidant found in red wine: resveratrol. These important substances protect healthy cells from harmful molecules called free radicals, which are produced when our body is exposed to toxins. Without antioxidants, free radicals can damage our cells and contribute to the development of disease; this is one of the key reasons why a plant-based diet is thought to help protect us against chronic diseases and promote wellbeing.
